We all know that being under stress is bad for our health, but do you when someone around you is stressed (family member, friend, colleague etc) it can have a negative impact on you too.
While you may be coping well or not so well with your own stress levels, dealing with someone else’s stress is completely different story.
So, it may be useful to know how to spot excessive stress in others, before it spirals out of control or gets worse.
Noticing spiralling stress in others and knowing what to do about it, could have a positive effect not just for you, but for the other person as well.
Here are some of the main signs to watch out for, and few practical tips on what can you do about it.
- They have poor focus, and are more undecisive than usual
- Having a nervous tic when talking
- Sweating more than usual
- They often feel drained or sick
- Smoking or drinking more than normal
- Overeating or avoiding meals
- Having problems with sleeping
- Complaining about more headaches than usual
- They seem more anxious or irritable
- They lose their temper more quickly than before
- They are constantly worrying about something
- Have suddenly lost their self-esteem and motivation
If you do recognise some of this or some other symptoms of elevated stress levels, or you are already suspecting that someone you know isn’t handling stress well, make a bold move and speak to him or her.
You don’t have to be an expert or professional stress counsellor, sometimes just being a good listener may be enough.
You could also encourage them to get involved in activities that may help them cope better, or propel them to seek professional help and not to be ashamed about it. And believe us there is nothing to lose but only to gain more peace and good vibes for both of you.
