Stress and anxiety – can owning a pet help them both?

If you are still wondering if owning a pet can lower blood pressure, improve mental health, decrease stress and anxiety, put your doubts aside because scientist say it is true!

Researchers have discovered that any engagement with an animal, like for example cat or dog can reduce stress, because it successfully decreases stress indicators like cortisol, lowers heart rate and blood pressure and boosts mood by engaging you in different mood-improving activities.

Experts believe that the happy chemical oxytocin plays a major role in the effect animals have on our mood.

It has been showed that oxytocin is released by eye contact and other contacts between people and animals who trust and care for one another.

Research has also showed that increased oxytocin results in higher levels of self-esteem and generosity and much lower levels of depression.

While dogs are in the spotlight, cats are also excellent companion animals for people. Scientific research has shown that there are as many benefits to having a cat as there are to owning a dog.

Compared with a dog, cat’s relative independence and simpler care needs can make it a first-choice pet for people who are always on the run or do not have much free time to spend at home.

Cats are intelligent and intuitive, and are excellent emotional support animals. Spending time with cats will increase your oxytocin levels and reduce stress.

One unique benefit cats offer to their owners is the healing power of purring. Cat lovers know this behaviour is a sign of a happy cat and can even recognize the different purrs cats make when they are asking for food or just relaxing.

Regardless of the reason for it, purring has been scientifically proven to have positive healing effects. Scientists have observed cats who purred after experiencing stress or trauma and found that purring promotes bone growth and tissue regeneration. These effects appear to relate to the frequency of the vibrations produced by purring.

For humans, purring has been shown not only to be calming but to reduce the risk of stroke and heart disease.

Bur regardless of whether you adopt a cat or a dog, interacting with animals will help you in your fight against anxiety and stress.  Your life will change for the better the day you bring home a pet, and you will probably forever remember your first day with your new pet as a turning point in you becoming a happier, calmer and healthier version of yourself.
