Tapping or Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is one of the newest stress relief techniques, created on the base of Chinese acupressure and modern psychology.
Tapping technique involves tapping with your fingertips on certain meridian points of the body, which is meant to remove energy blockages and reduce negative feelings and emotions.
Tapping is much less invasive than acupuncture, because it follows the same energy lines but without the use of needles.
It only requires you to use your fingertips and gently tap on certain meridian points while thinking of what may be causing you pain, stress, or anxiety.
This type of stress relieving method, has the ability to send messages to the amygdala, which is part of the brain responsible for triggering the stress response in our bodies.
And by stimulating the meridian points with tapping, tension, stress as well as negative emotions are supposed to decrease.
It may also be helpful to use EFT before an anticipated situation that may cause stress or anxiety.
It is not difficult technique and here is a short explanation on how it is done:
- First find a place which will be comfortable for you and where you will not be disturbed.
- Second identify the problem that you wish to resolve, but remember that you should choose only one issue to focus on during each session of tapping.
- Score the initial intensity of the problem on a scale of 0-10, with 10 being the worst.
- Before the beginning of each round of tapping, you should choose a simple reminder phrase to repeat while tapping the karate chop point.
This short phrase should recognise the issue and convey self-acceptance in spite of it.
- The phrase should be also repeated during each round of tapping whilst concentrating on specific points on the body.
Tapping points, are as follows:
- Karate chop point – in the centre of the fleshy part of the outer hand.
- Top of the Head – located in the centre of the top of the head.
- Eyebrow – referring to inner brow, just above and to the side of the nose.
- Side of the eye – located on the bone at the outside corner of the eye.
- Under the eye – located on the bone under the eye, about 1 inch below the pupil.
- Under the nose – this is the point between the nose and upper lip.
- Chin point – halfway between the lower lip and the bottom of the chin.
- Point at the beginning of the collarbone
- Under the arm point – located at the side of the body, about 4 inches below the armpit.
- At the end it is recommended to test the intensity again and rate the scale from 0 to10, and compared to the beginning this score is supposed to be lower, and overtime hopefully reach 0.
Emotional Freedom Technique is a self-help procedure which popularity across the world is increasing, and it is backed up by evidence proving that it works and can help fight stress, anxiety, anger, sadness, all sorts of negative feelings and addictions, chronic pain, PTSD and many other conditions.
